Important Auto Insurance Terms To Know

Premium

The dollar amount you pay for your insurance. Policies are usually written for six months or a year. Discounts are usually available to customers who pay the full premium at time of purchase. Some insurance companies offer discounts to people who prepay their premiums.

Deductible

Claim

Bodily Injury Liability

This coverage protects you if you cause an accident resulting in someone’s injury, sickness or death. Should you be sued, it would fund your legal defense and/or cover a judgment against you.

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage kicks in if your car is damaged by hitting another vehicle or object. The law doesn’t require you to have it, but most lenders do. Payouts tend to be limited to the cash value of a car, so you may want ignore this kind of coverage if your vehicle is older.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is also is known as physical damage coverage or Other-Than-Collision (OTC) coverage. It protects you if something other than a collision damages your car. Gap Insurance

This coverage pays you the difference between what you owe and what the insurance company will pay if you total your vehicle. If you purchase a brand new vehicle the value decreases the minute you drive off the lot. Now let’s say you total it on the way home; you still owe the dealer the full price of the vehicle, but insurance will only pay you “Blue Book” value. Gap insurance pays the difference between these two numbers.

Cancellation is simply a term designating the termination of home insurance policy. The terms of agreement detail the reasons that can lead to the termination of an insurance policy, and they differ from state to state and have to be permitted by law.
